Very large-scale integration (VLSI) is a process for designing and manufacturing integrated circuits (ICs) that combine thousands of transistors and other components onto a single chip. The term originated in the 1970s, along with other terms like small-scale integration (SSI) and large-scale integration (LSI). The definition of "many" devices on a chip varies by industry, and a VLSI analog part is different from a VLSI digital logic part or a VLSI memory part.
